Kate found several species of journalist exist… each with their own unique needs. Kate gave each species the perfect name :-)

Journalist Maximus – the “I carry everything with me at all times” journalist.

Journalist Simplicus – the JS doesn’t want to carry a lot of gear (or if they do, it’s small gear – netbook, point and shoot camera, iphone) and needs to move quickly.

Journalist Retroicus – often seen sporting a fedora, this journalist eschews any and all equipment besides their trusty notepad.

Journalist Impatiens Paranoicus – generally a traveler – roaming to far-flung, exotic locales to ply their trade.

And my favorite!

Journalist Fashionista – She (fieldnote: typically, though not exclusively, this species is female) wants it all. Capacity for all her gear, comfort in the carrying and style in the look. She wants to fit in on the pages of Vogue yet write for Newsweek.

Their name is a play on the word vinyl (say the word out loud fast and it sounds like “vinyl”) was formed in 2002 by Nicola Freegard and Robin Janson.   While WAS used New Zealand billboards, Vy & Elle makes their bags from US billboards.  They offer several types of bags but this particular Laptop Pack measures 15″x12.5″x4.5″.  It has a padded laptop area, several pockets for cell phone, accessories, etc., and an adjustable, detachable shoulder strap.  The Laptop Pack is available for around $132.  It’s sells at several retailers; check their site for details. ~ Comment on this bag. Next, onto these really cool laptop bags that I came across which are made by WAS in Auckland New Zealand.  WAS laptop bags are made from recycled billboards so each bag is one of a kind.  WAS selects the most interesting parts of the billboards to make their bags.  Once cut, cleaned, ironed, and stitched together, the result is a 100% unique bag.  The bags measure 370mm wide x 230mm high x 80mm deep, which is about 14.5x9x3 inches in size.  They’re available on the WAS site for $199.  As of today WAS doesn’t ship outside of New Zealand, but they’re site says they will start soon. ~ Comment on this bag. ]]> http://www.rainebrooke.com/blog/2006/07/billboard-vinyl-laptop-bags-from-was/feed/ 2 Alchemy Goods Messenger Bag http://www.rainebrooke.com/blog/2006/06/alchemy-goods-messenger-bag/ http://www.rainebrooke.com/blog/2006/06/alchemy-goods-messenger-bag/#comments Tue, 06 Jun 2006 20:28:39 +0000 Steve http://www.rainebrooke.com/blog/?p=34 Once a week I stop over at Kate Trgovac’s Squidoo Lens called “Funky, Chic and Cool Laptop Bags”.  Kate’s lens is by far the best source of information for those looking for uncommon laptop bags.  Her most recent post is on the Alchemy Goods messenger bag, which I thought was a great product to post here too.  Alchemy Goods offers some really cool bags made from recycled materials.  They gather used bicycle tubes from their local Seattle bike shops and use these inner tubes for the bags exterior.  Then they get used seat belts from local junkyards and make these into the bag straps.  The messenger bag only measures about 13x8x11 inches so won’t fit larger sized laptops, but it does offer multiple internal pockets, internal cell phone pocket, zippered front pocket and internal key clip for keys.  It starts around $148, but for a little more you can customize the piping and lining in several different choices of colors. ~ Comment on this bag. The shell is made from 900D nylon, while the lining is 420D ripstop nylong.  The entire bag measures approx. 17”x12”x7”, and the laptop sleeve measures 15.4”x10.2”x1.6”.  It’s available in gray, purple, green, orange (pictured), blue, red and olive.  It sells on the Crumpler site for $90.  ~ Comment on this bag.
