I thought for a little change I would break away from just covering laptop bags and write a few tips on laptop security and preventing laptop theft. First up is a really simple tip but one that I feel should still be covered. As I add these seven tips any suggestions or additions are always welcome.
Common Sense (Tip #1) — One of the best ways to prevent your laptop from being stolen is to use common sense. If you need to leave your laptop in a car, be sure the laptop is covered and out of site. Place it in a laptop bag, put a jacket, sweater or towel over it and place it on the floor, under the seat, or place it inside the trunk. If you leave it inside the car make sure the doors are locked. Don’t forget what time of year it is. Extreme summer heat and winter cold can cause damage to computers and components. If you’re ever in a crowded room, conference or airport, be sure to keep your hands on your laptop at all times. Same goes for using a payphone. All it takes is a few seconds for you to set your laptop down and look away and a thief can be off with your laptop. Staying in a hotel? Anchor your laptop to a secure object with a cable lock or use the hotels safe. Going to lunch or taking a break during a meeting or conference? Lock your laptop down or take it with you. Common sense – it’s the best way to prevent your laptop from being ripped off.
