Earth Day 2008 ~ Are you asking yourself “How can I help?”

I’ve always been an environmentally conscious person. I knew a lot of the things I was doing, purchasing and contributing to were harmful to the environment but until recently I wasn’t doing much about it. After my daughters were born and then seeing the film “An Inconvenient Truth” my eyes were opened and I started to really care and take note of the things that were happening to the planet. During a recent conversation with a friend, something in my mind was triggered. I realized that my daughters are going to grow up in a polluted world unless everyone starts to take steps in the right direction and that the first person that needs to change is me, their father. To get myself going in the right direction I started doing a lot of reading and research on the issues affecting the environment. Now my whole family is helping out. We recycle everything that can be recycled, all of our standard light bulbs have been changed out to more energy efficient lighting, we’re purchasing safer “green” products, I buy food and produce that is organic and we try to reduce waste as much as possible.

For my company Rainebrooke, I’ve also taken it down the “green” road with our new “Rainebrooke ~ Green” initiative. We’re recycling, being more energy efficient, shipping with recycled boxes, printing on recycling paper, reducing our waste and offsetting the remainder of our footprint with offsets that we purchase through Carbonfund.org.

So if you’re asking yourself “How can I help?”, the best thing is to first simply become aware. Once you’re aware of the fact that there is a problem, start taking some simple steps to help out. Recycle around your home …buy some containers to separate plastics, paper, aluminum, etc. Instead of throwing out all your junk mail, save it and recycle it. Purchase safer cleaning products and other household products. When a standard light bulb burns out, replace it with an energy efficient compact fluorescent bulb. Purchase organic foods. Support companies that protect the environment and buy products made by companies that are environmentally friendly. Purchase carbon offsets that support carbon reducing projects. Contact your local senator and representative and tell them you want tough climate change legislation.

With everyone doing their part, our world can be a safer and cleaner place for many generations to come.

Rainebrooke turns “Green” & partners with Carbonfund.org

Rainebrooke ~ Green / Carbonfund.orgRainebrooke is proud to announce that we have turned “green” and have also partnered with Carbonfund.org to offset our carbon emissions. We started our new “Rainebrooke ~ Green” program in March of 2008 and made a commitment to protect the environment by actively reducing our carbon footprint. To reduce our footprint we have made numerous changes to the way we operate our business and have also adopted the CarbonFund.org motto of “Reduce What You Can, Offset What You Can’t®”. To offset what we can’t reduce we have partnered with Carbonfund.org. Through carbon offsets that we purchase from Carbonfund.org our carbon footprint will be reduced to zero. These offsets will support carbon-reducing projects such as renewable energy (solar, wind, methane), energy efficiency and reforestation projects. With our carbon footprint being reduced to zero, Rainebrooke will be CarbonFree® (carbon neutral).

NVSpc ~ personalize your laptop with a custom paint job

If you want your laptop to have a really personalized and customized look head on over to the NVSpc website. No vinyl laptop skins offered here, just highly customized paint jobs. NVSpc is a Miami based company that offers completely customized laptops. Unlike vinyl skins which cover the outside panel of a laptop, NVSpc can paint each of the individual panels of your laptop. You pick the colors, which areas you want painted, upload your own pictures or pick one of their pre-existing designs. I tried a couple different color combinations, picture uploads and pre-existing designs and each combination came out to around $400. The pricing depends on how many panels you have painted. The combinations I tried had all the panels painted, so you could choose to have just the outside painted for less than $200. They can also fill in the logo that’s on your laptop so the paint job is not disrupted and has a nice smooth surface. Don’t have a laptop? NVSpc also sells laptop from HP, Samsung, Acer and Panasonic. Buy a laptop from them and they’ll paint the cover for free. ~ Comment on NVSpc…have you ever used their services? If so send us a picture of your laptop and we’ll post it here.

Virtual Office Workstation II Car Desk

If you work from your car every day, here’s a product for you. The Virtual Office Workstation II car desk from Virtual Office Inc. is a laptop briefcase, mounted laptop stand and desk all in one. I know it’s a rough looking briefcase, but if you work from your car you most likely need something that’s tough. Since the briefcase is hard sided it’ll take a few knocks fairly well. It’s made from ABS and acrylic plastic so it’s rigid but lightweight. When you’re ready to work from the car, the desk mounts and locks into the stand. You can then use the desk as a writing surface or pull out your laptop and use it as a laptop tray. You can purchase the desk separately for $179, or with two types of mounts / stands. The desk with a no drill mount is $358 or with a self drilling mount is $268. Now, if they only offered the desks in some colors :)

As a side note, you read more about ABS and what it’s used for here. One thing I found interesting is that ABS is sometimes used in tattoo inks …inks that contain ABS are extremely vivid.
